Educational process at the Chair of Pediatric Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery

Organization of educational process

3rd, 4th, 5th year students of the Stomatological faculty, 4th year of the General Medicine faculty and students of the Overseas Student Training Faculty(OSTF) with the Russian and English languages of study are trained at the department

Teaching staff of the department created teaching materials (TM) and electronic teaching materials (ETM) in disciplines "Pediatric Dentistry and prevention of dental diseases", "Orthodontics" and "Maxillofacial Surgery." The structure and content of the TM and ETM corresponds to the regulations on the training package of teaching disciplines in obtaining an undergraduate degree, approved by the VSMU. The developed TM and ETM allow to provide the educational process at the 3rd, 4th, 5th courses of the stomatological faculty in all the disciplines of the department in accordance with the requirements of the State educational standard of higher professional education. The created teaching materials provides methodical guidance and consultative support to students’ studies in all forms of education, creates conditions to optimize the process of mastering students' academic disciplines, enables effective organization and providing of students’ self-study.  

The teaching materials include the following sections: theoretical section, practical section, knowledge control section, as well as reference and auxiliary materials. It includes a set of educational, academic, visual, multimedia materials,  training hand-outs on the disciplines of the department.

The department constantly works on perfection of quality of students’ preparation on the disciplines of the department, observance of the interdisciplinary principle in the students’ training, monitoring of the quality of the educational process, improvement of the knowledge assessment rating system. Distance education has been introduced at the department, methodical support in the organization of students’ self-study has been developed.

Innovative educational technologies, active and interactive forms of giving practical classes, demonstration of multimedia presentations, photo-video materials, illustrative tasks, tests, and business role-playing games are widely introduced by the teaching staff.

An extensive illustrative computer base including elements of interactive forms of training has been developed.
With the aim for mastering practical skills, a special cycle for simulation training has been introduced. There is an additional training of practical skills on models, simulators and phantoms.

In order to better and comprehensively master the educational material, they show the students thematic patients, a detailed study of the anamnesis, dental status, clinical picture, treatment tactics is planned. The study of individual nosology is supported by clinical cases from the practice of teachers of the department. The use of electronic databases in various clinical cases allows to present the training material more clearly, accessible and convincingly, promotes the understanding of the material and affects the increase in the effectiveness of practical exercises. Students study extra- and intraoral photographs of patients, their performance and dental status, the clinical picture of the lesion, the data of X-ray and other additional study methods, and also argue the preliminary and final diagnosis, suggest the most competent treatment tactics, and demonstrate the technique of performing therapeutic and diagnostic manipulations.

Quality control of education provides various forms of control. All the necessary methodological support for students' independent work has been developed and implemented. In addition to traditional forms of control of independent work, taking into account the specifics of the department, developed and actively introduced into the educational process the following forms of control of students' independent work: the creation of multimedia presentations on the motivation of dental health of preschool and school age children, pregnant women, prevention and treatment of child caries; development of information booklets, patient aids; preparation of staged projects - fairy tales "Lessons of dental health".

According to the disciplines of the department: "Pediatric Dentistry and prevention of dental diseases",  "Orthodontics" and "Maxillofacial Surgery", a rating system for assessing knowledge was introduced, according to the "Regulations on the rating system for assessing students' knowledge." There are forms of accounting for the rankings of students for each semester and an electronic calculation table for the disciplines.

At the department there is a list of practical skills that the student must learn in the disciplines studied at 3rd, 4th and 5th years and a minimum of practical skills for each of the semesters is developed. Students conduct daily diaries of practical skills. In addition to registering practical skills in diaries, each student has a list of the types of medical and preventive activities that he performs during the academic semester.

The main activities of the department on improving teaching and methodical work:

1. Constant updating of materials of lectures and an illustrative information base to practical studies.

2. Active implementation of the rating system of knowledge assessment and elements of independent work of students.

3. Development and regular updating of all sections and blocks of TM and ETM.

4. Ensuring the accessibility of the main elements of TM and ETM for students.

5. Carrying out a set of measures to improve the learning of practical skills by students.

6. Wide introduction of innovative educational technologies in the educational process. Development of new pedagogical methods and improvement of methodological support of practical exercises and lectures.

7. Preparation of electronic teaching aids and additional information and didactic material.

8. Publication of teaching aids, textbooks of a new type on the subjects of the disciplines studied at the department.
