Educational process at VSMU

Undergraduate training

The time frames of academic year are strictly regulated. It is divided into two semesters:

Autumn semester: September – January
Spring semester: February – July

The training process in each semester is carried out according to the approved academic curriculum and contains the precisely definite number of disciplines. The transfer to the next academic year is possible only under condition of passing all exams and credits, specified by the academic plan. Any shifts and transfers of disciplines to other semesters are not allowed.

Foreign citizens are offered following specialities - “General medicine”, “Stomatology”, “Pharmacy”. Two forms of training are available: Russian Medium and English Medium. Training term in “General medicine” makes 6 years, in “Stomatology” and “Pharmacy” – 5 years.

The curriculum of both forms of training is identical. VSMU offers the educational process based on traditional lectures, seminars, laboratory and practical classes. Studying the clinical subjects for 4-6 year students of “General medicine” and “Stomatology” specialities is conducted as cycle classes.

Russian or English Medium of training

To be enrolled at the university, an applicant is interviewed in the language of training and takes exams in profession-oriented subjects (chemistry and biology). 

Foreign citizens who seek admission to the medical university, and whose level of knowledge in the language of training and profession-oriented subjects (chemistry and biology) does not meet the requirements for higher education, have the opportunity for training at the preparatory department of VSMU to study the language of training, chemistry and biology, and physics as an optional subject. After passing the final certification, graduates of the preparatory department are issued certificates allowing them to enroll in higher educational institutions on the territory of the Republic of Belarus.

The term of study at the preparatory department is 8-10 months.

Russian language is the mandatory discipline both for the Preparatory Training Course and for 1-3 year students of all specialities. Within the entire period of training, the Russian language is actively used in everyday life and to communicate with patients, hospital staff and doctors. 

From the first to the third year the students study preclinical subjects:

1st year – Anatomy, Chemistry, Bio-organic chemistry, Physics, Biology, Histology, Cytology and Embryology

2nd year – Biological chemistry, Normal physiology, general care therapeutic/surgical patients, Micro-biology

3rd year – Pathological physiology/Anatomy, Propedeutics of internal diseases/General surgery, Pharmacology, Topographical anatomy. The lectures are held in English.

4th year – 6th year – general surgery, Traumatology and Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Urology, Oncology, Otolaryngology, Anesthesiology and Rehabilitation, Clinical medicine, Endocrinology, Ultra-sound scanning, Dermatology and Dermatovenerology, Cardiology, 

Infectious diseases, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Forensic medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics and General Hygiene.

Upon completion of training, the university graduates are issued a diploma of a standard form of DI series in Russian and foreign (English) languages.
