On May 14, 2025, the solemn ceremony of opening of the memorial sign “Tree of Life” on the place of the former prisoner of war camp “5th Regiment” took place.

The memorial sign symbolizes the indomitable spirit of the Belarusian people during the Nazi genocide and their aspiration for a peaceful and independent life.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Deputy Prosecutor General of the Republic of Belarus, State Counselor of Justice, 3rd class Sergei Khmaruk, the Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee Alexander Subbotin, the Chairman of the Vitebsk City Executive Committee Aleksei Geroev, the deputy corps of deputies, the schoolchildren, students, clergy, the representatives of labor collectives of the city.

The event was attended by the students and staff of VSMU, headed by the vice-rector for ideological and educational work Dmitry Kuzhel.

Participants and guests of the event honored the memory of the victims and laid flowers at the new memorial sign.
