On November 20, 2025, for the first time, authorized representatives of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania visited VSMU to hold talks in the field of medical education.
The university delegation was led by Rector Alexey Chukanov. The guests were also received by Vice Rector for International Affairs Denis Lits, along with heads of the university’s international departments: Elena Sharyhina, Head of the Department of International and Interregional Affairs, and Anna Pchelintseva, Head of the Department of International Affairs.
The Tanzanian guests expressed great interest in the training of doctors, noting the extensive experience and success of our university in this field, which boasts rich traditions. They were also impressed by the level of training and the university’s infrastructure.
One of the main topics of negotiations was the organization of comprehensive education for Tanzanian citizens at Vitebsk Medical University. With many years of experience in training international students, VSMU is ready to offer high-quality educational programs in both English and Russian, tailored for students from Africa. Discussions focused on admission procedures, specifics of the educational process, and the creation of comfortable living and studying conditions.
Both parties paid significant attention to academic mobility programs. This includes internships for Tanzanian students at VSMU, as well as opportunities for VSMU faculty and scientists to share their expertise with colleagues in Tanzania. Such exchanges will not only enhance professional skills but also contribute to the advancement of medical knowledge and technology.
The most important outcome of the visit was the agreement to sign a cooperation memorandum between VSMU and several leading universities in Tanzania. This document will establish a solid legal framework for long-term, mutually beneficial partnership, outline cooperation mechanisms, and open new horizons for joint projects.
"This visit is a historic moment for our university. We are confident that cooperation with Tanzania has great potential. The willingness of both parties to work actively will enable us to achieve concrete results soon — including admitting the first students and launching exchange programs," said the rector of VSMU.
