Formation of Traditional Values Through the Example of Christmas Carols

carols 01Today, there is a growing interest in folk art and traditions worldwide. Throughout history, the Belarusian people have accumulated and developed a unique national culture – a collection of traditions, customs, norms, and values.

Folklore is one of the means of preserving Belarusian national traditions and passing them on to future generations. It is imbued with pedagogical experience and folk wisdom, teaching us to cherish our cultural heritage. Tolerance and forbearance, as traditional Christian virtues, have gradually become hallmarks of Belarusians.

On January 8, 2026, the participants of the project "Family and Spiritual-Moral Traditions of Belarus" decided to revive the ancient Belarusian tradition of singing Christmas carols. The idea was implemented at Hostel №5. Students sang carol songs with wishes of health, happiness, and well-being, while the "hosts" rewarded the carolers with sweets. The encounter with this folk ritual was conducted in Belarusian, making it bright, engaging, and fun. It made a special impression on students from India and Lebanon!

Engagement with the roots of Belarusian culture is one of the foundations for nurturing love, respect, and pride in one’s country, as well as for fostering patriotic feelings and spirituality.
The participants of the project are confident that the tradition of celebrating Svyatki (the Christmas and New Year festivities) will become a cherished custom at Vitebsk State Medical University, and that the study of Belarusian traditions, including among students of the Faculty of Overseas Students Training, will continue.
