Professor of the Department of Organic Chemistry Viktor Iosifovich Gidranovich has passed away

Gidranovich VIProfessor Viktor Iosifovich Gidranovich, head of the Department of Organic Chemistry, passed away on January 13, 2026.

V.I. Gidranovich was born on October 28, 1934, in the village of Koryst, Soligorsk District, Minsk Region.

He graduated from Vitebsk State Veterinary Institute in 1959. From 1959 to 1961, he worked as a junior researcher, and from 1961 to 1963 as a senior researcher at the Vitebsk Regional Agricultural Experimental Station. From 1963 to 1965, he studied in postgraduate studies at the Department of Organic and Biological Chemistry at Vitebsk Veterinary Institute.

After completing postgraduate studies, he was assigned to Vitebsk State Pedagogical Institute, where he worked as a senior lecturer, associate professor of the Department of Chemistry, and Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry from 1966 to 1969. In 1966, he defended his candidate dissertation in the specialty 03 00 04 “Biochemistry.” In 1969, he was transferred to the Department of Organic and Biological Chemistry at Vitebsk Veterinary Institute, where he served as an associate professor (1969–1971) and later as head of the Department of Organic and Biological Chemistry (1971–1998). In 1987, he defended his doctoral dissertation. In the specialty 03 00 04 “Biochemistry,” he was awarded the title of Professor of the Department of Organic and Biological Chemistry in 1989. From 1998 to 2009, he worked as a Professor of the Department of Chemistry at Vitebsk State University named after P.M. Masherov. From April 1, 2009, to January 14, 2020, he served as a Professor of the Department of Organic Chemistry at Vitebsk State Medical University.

Professor V.I. Gidranovich’s areas of scientific interest are broad and cover various aspects of biological chemistry. For the first time in Belarus, he discovered and described selenium deficiency and ways to prevent it in animals. He also created a new scientific direction focused on studying carbohydrate metabolism in the endocrine system of animals. He was a member of the Scientific Coordination Council on Biochemistry of Animals and Humans of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the Belarusian SSR Academy of Sciences, as well as a member of the Dissertation Defense Council at the Leningrad Veterinary Institute. He published over 200 scientific papers, supervised the defense of three candidate dissertations, served as a scientific consultant for two doctoral dissertations, and mentored nine master's students in biochemistry. Viktor Iosifovich actively guided student research activities. The results of student research were presented at international, national, regional, and university conferences. Under his guidance, more than 30 student scientific works were published. At the Republican Student Scientific Work Competition, experimental studies prepared under Professor V.I. Gidranovich’s supervision consistently received high honors.

V.I. Gidranovich enjoyed well-deserved respect among the staff and students of the university. Throughout his many years of work, Professor V.I. Gidranovich was awarded numerous honors, including the Certificate of Honor from the Vitebsk Regional Committee and Executive Committee, the Certificate of Honor from the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the USSR, the Certificate of Honor from the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Belarus, the Certificate of Honor from the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus, and the Certificate of Honor from the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee.

His entire life was characterized by unwavering dedication to his chosen field and serve to people. He was always responsive, compassionate, and considerate of others’ problems. He constantly extended a helping hand to those in need, supporting not only with words but also through actions.

The administration, staff, and students of Vitebsk State Medical University deeply mourn the passing of Viktor Iosifovich and express their condolences to his family and loved ones. His bright memory will remain forever in our hearts.
