Mikhail Grigorievich Sachek was born in the village of Voronichi, Slonim region, on January 10, 1929, into a large peasant family.

In 1949 he graduated from Zelva secondary school and entered Vitebsk State Medical Institute at the Faculty of Treatment and Prevention.

After graduating from the institute in 1955, he was sent to head the Dvoretsky medical district of the Chashniksky district of the Vitebsk region, where he worked until September 1956. Then he was transferred to the position of surgeon at the Lepel hospital. In 1958, he was appointed chief physician of the Lepel hospital, and then, after the abolition of the district health department, chief physician of the Lepel district. Mikhail Grigorievich enjoyed enormous authority among the population of the Lepel region. While working at the Lepel hospital, he was twice elected as a deputy of the regional Council of Workers' Deputies.

In 1961, while working as the chief physician of the Lepel Hospital, he entered correspondence graduate school in surgery at Vitebsk Medical Institute, and in 1965 defended his dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences on the topic “Resection of the trachea and main bronchi.”

Since 1963, Mikhail Grigorievich was appointed chief surgeon of the Vitebsk regional health department.

In September 1966, Mikhail Grigorievich began working at Vitebsk State Medical Institute as an assistant in the department of hospital surgery. From that time on, his whole life was connected with “Alma mater”. During his time as an assistant, Mikhail Grigorievich proved himself to be a highly qualified, erudite teacher.

In September 1971, he was elected by competition to the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Hospital Surgery. Actively working on his doctoral dissertation, in December 1972, Mikhail Grigorievich was transferred to the position of researcher at the Central Scientific Research Laboratory, and in November 1975 he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation “The possibility of restoring the function of lung tissue after obstructive atelectasis.”

In 1978, Mikhail Grigorievich was awarded the academic title of professor by the Higher Attestation Commission under the Council of Ministers of the USSR.

On July 31, 1979, he was appointed rector of Vitebsk State Medical Institute and headed it for almost 17 years. Mikhail Grigorievich paid a lot of attention to strengthening the material and technical base of the institute, training personnel, developing scientific research, and organizing assistance to practical healthcare in the region.

During this time, the following were opened at VSMI: the correspondence department of the Faculty of Pharmacy (1981), the Faculty of Advanced Training for Doctors (1985), the training of foreign citizens began (1981), 6 new departments were opened, 40 doctoral and 144 candidate dissertations were defended. For merits in the training of qualified specialists and contribution to the development of medical science and public health, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR in 1984, the Vitebsk State Medical Institute was awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples.

In 1984, Mikhail Grigorievich headed the Department of Surgical Diseases No. 1 (currently the Department of Hospital Surgery with FAT and PR courses).

The result of his scientific activity is more than 350 scientific papers, 35 rationalization proposals and inventions, 13 monographs on various sections of thoracic and abdominal surgery. Under his leadership, 25 candidate and 4 doctoral dissertations were completed, and a school of surgeons and a scientific and pedagogical school for thoracic and abdominal surgery were created. In 1981 M.G. Sachek was awarded the title “Honored Scientist of the Belarusian SSR.”

On December 12, 1997, Mikhail Grigorievich was elected Honorary Full Member (Academician) of the Belarusian Academy of Medical Sciences.

Activities of M.G. Sacheka was awarded the gratitude of the President of the Republic of Belarus, the Order of the Badge of Honor, Certificates of Honor from the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the BSSR, the Vitebsk Regional and Vitebsk City Executive Committees, and other government awards. He was awarded a medal. N.I. Pirogov, medal named after. Academician E.N. Pavlovsky, badges “Excellence in Health Care of the BSSR”, “Inventor of the USSR”, medal “For Merit in the Development of VSMI”, badge “Veteran of Labor of VSMU”.

In 1999 M.G. Sachek became an Honorary Citizen of the city of Vitebsk, and based on the results of his work in 2013, he became the Person of the Year for the Vitebsk region.

The editorial publishing and printing center of the university published a book - a bibliographic index dedicated to M.G. Sachek, “And he devoted his life to serving people...”
