A delegation from Vitebsk State Medical University, together with representatives of Andijan Medical Institute, took part in the unveiling of a memorial in Vitebsk District. The memorial commemorates natives of Uzbekistan who gave their lives for the liberation of Belarus during the Great Patriotic War.
The ceremony was held in the village of Shapury. It was attended by Alexander Rogozhnik, Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, and Shukhratbek Abdurakhmanov, Hokim of Andijan Region, as well as VSMU staff and students – including students from Uzbekistan – and their colleagues and peers from Andijan State Medical Institute.
Approximately 18,000 Soviet soldiers are buried in the mass grave in Shapury. Among them are 729 natives of Uzbekistan, around 50 of whom came from Andijan Region. This is one of the largest military burial sites in Belarus.
VSMU students and staff, together with the honoured guests, observed a minute of silence in memory of the fallen and laid flowers at the memorial. The event demonstrated the strong international partnership between the two universities. Their cooperation includes not only educational exchange but also joint efforts to preserve historical memory and promote patriotic education among young people in Belarus and Uzbekistan.
